Henry and Clement Studebaker opened a blacksmith shop in 1852 in South Bend, Indiana. They started building wagons for farmers and such, and then got their big break when the U.S. Army put in a big order for wagons for the Civil War. They built their first electric car in 1902, and began selling gasoline-powered cars in 1913.
